Why the Bible?

The Bible was written by many different authors (40, all of which were of Jewish heritage), over many years (2,000 or so from Moses - 1500 B.C. to John - 90 A.D.) with one Divine purpose. The Bible, consisting of the New and Old Testaments in the Christian cannon, consists of 66 separate books written throughout the ages, all deemed to be authoritative (divinely inspired), and brought together as one whole. The word 'Bible' means literally, 'the Book'. The word 'Testament' (as in Old and New Testament) can have the meaning of a covenant, in that God establishes an old, and then a new covenant with his people throughout history, the Lord Jesus Christ being the turning point into the New Covenant, or testament God establishes with man.

If the Bible is God's Word, that means it is God's Word to man. The Apostle Paul wrote that, All scripture is given by inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16), that is divinely inspired and given unto man all the way from Moses through the Apostle Paul.

So how is the Word of God useful for us? In this case it can be a guide for us, a measuring stick to compare our thoughts with what is written.

Matthew 4:10 "For it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

The written Word of God gives us a guide post for our lives, just as the commandments did for the Children of Israel, 3000 years ago. The Bible continues to grow worldwide and to be translated into over 1000 languages across the globe. It is also the greatest selling book of all time. Sixty-six books that come together to make one extraordinary divinely inspired book. Let it speak to you today. God bless.
